For Independence Anniversary…

St. Joseph High School stages third Culture Day
‘FOSTERING Unity through our Culture’ was the theme for the Independence ‘Culture Day’ hosted by St. Joseph High School, in Woolford Avenue, Georgetown, on Tuesday.
It was the third year that the school staged the event, this time in recognition of Guyana’s 44th Independence Anniversary and the unity quest was evident on the faces of the eager students as they proudly showcased costumes of the diverse ethnic groups in the country.
Commenting on the motivation for the staging, Social Studies and History teacher, Ms. Beverly Simon said the members of the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and the faculty realised that children need to be reminded from where they came and pointed to  where they are going.
“This gives them a sense of identity and that is why the Culture Day was planned with collaboration between the two bodies.
The activities included various cultural presentations in song and dance and fashion displays. Among the artistes who performed were reigning Calypso Monarch, Mighty Rebel and Mighty Chief, the Amerindian calypsonian.

The highlights of the programme were the tributes to prominent Guyanese, including legendary West Indian cricketers Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai; former Banks DIH Chairman, the late Mr. Peter D’Aguiar; the first President of Guyana, the late Mr. Arthur Chung and renowned lawyer, deceased Sir Lionel Luckhoo.
The School Principal, Ms. Gail Primo also showed off art and craft made by some  students to distinguish the variety of cultures.
Guyana attained Independence on May 26, 1966.
