-at Golden Grove community centre commissioning
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony recently declared open the Golden Grove/ Nabaclis and Haslington Community Centre at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, where he stated that all communities have the full support of his ministry in terms of sports and cultural development. Minister Anthony noted that the multi-purpose community centre is very important as persons will be able to practise sports which can be used to bring greater social cohesion within communities and must be exploited more.
The new centre aims to promote community development through self-help activities and provide training for the social, educational, cultural, physical and moral development.
This includes extra lessons for children after school and for children with irregular or late attendance. It will also cater for older students who have dropped out of school.
Activities will also include computer training and other skills.
In addition, the centre will cultivate and maintain a harmonious working relationship among members of the organisation and the villagers. Such activities include senior citizens meetings, and tennis, football and cricket competitions will be held for villagers who would like to participate in the activities.
Minister Anthony extended congratulations to the Golden Grove Nabaclis and Haslington Association of New York and also the local group for the leadership and guidance they have given to ensure that the project came to fruition
He added that the Ministry will be donating a package with a number of sports gear to the centre. The centre, with the help of members of the community, will aid in preserving cultures that were regularly practised in Guyana, but which are now fading, such as steel pan playing.
Chairman of the Concerned Residents’ Action Group, Donald Richards, said that the facility will benefit youths and enable them to become better citizens.
Leader of the Golden Grove/ Nabaclis and Haslington Organisation (USA), Whitney Smith, stated the organisation was formed in 2003 with the intention of giving back to the community in which he grew up. The organisation decided to build a new community centre which will benefit young people and senior citizens.
Smith added that he hoped persons would make full use of the centre and encouraged members to care and maintain it for the future generations.
Member of Golden Grove Community, Bonnie Luke, stated that the centre will be beneficial as it will help youths and senior citizens to become more productive.
