COMMANDER of Police ‘B’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai disclosed yesterday that several persons were held for questioning following the robbery/murder at Wellington Park, Corentyne, Berbice, early Monday morning. Security guard Arjune Gobin, 47, of Bloomfield, Corentyne, was shot and killed while his employer, Rajindra Persaud, who also suffered gunshot injuries, survived the attack.
It happened when a gang of gunmen hammered their way into the home of Surrendra Ganesh, after firing shots at the premises.
In relation to the unlawful killing of Ernest McAllister, 37, of Number 79, whose body was found with stab wounds, on Saturday, Merai said investigations revealed that the victim was beaten by a group of people after he left a wedding celebration in that ward of Corriverton, Corentyne.
Police are investigating a report that he interfered with another man’s wife at the function and was thrashed.
Ten suspects were in custody, up to press time, assisting with the probe into that crime after the labourer’s corpse was discovered, about 21:00h, at Old Dam, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, bearing suspected stab wounds.
His remains are at Skeldon Hospital Mortuary, Corentyne, awaiting a post mortem examination.
Still being investigated, as well, is the murder of housewife Nalini Bhoge, 46, of lot 19 Line Path, Corriverton, who was killed in her home last January 30.
She was stabbed repeatedly while alone in the house and her husband returned to find her murdered.
Merai said there has been no breakthrough in that case but the file is not closed.
Six persons, including the woman’s husband, were questioned and released after the discovery of Bhoge in a pool of blood with several chop and stab wounds on her neck and upper back.
A bloodstained cutlass and an ice pick were taken away from the scene and it was, subsequently, reported that gold jewellery and $60,000 had been stolen.
United States passports, issued to her three daughters, Bharti, 12, Khishana, 10 and Praveena, eight, were retrieved from the backyard of their home.
Investigations are also continuing into the March 27 killing of Liloutie Seeram called ‘Pinky’, 31, of Edinburgh New Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, who was chopped to death the same time that her mother, Latta Inderdeo, was wounded in the cutlass attack.
Merai said that an arrest warrant has since been issued for Seeram’s husband, Rooplall Boodhoo, who has been charged for his wife’s unlawful killing but is yet to be arrested.
Meanwhile, Wainwright Telford, 48, of Angoy’s Avenue, Greater New Amsterdam, has been charged with the Sunday murder of Michael Kissoon, 36, who lived in the same street.
The accused has since been remanded to prison to await the start of the preliminary inquiry into the charge.
