CHARLESTOWN/Albouystown point guard Rodwel ‘Kobe’ Fortune was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the Mackeson National Super Ward basketball championship according to tournament coordinator and secretary of the GABA Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan. Chronicle Sport was informed that the race involved Fortune, Dwayne ‘Brown Sugar’ Roberts and youth basketball star Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai and after carefully scrutinising the data collected from the said players from the tournament, the diminutive point guard came out on top.
In seven games played in the ten-team tournament, Fortune averaged 14.4 points per game and totalled 101 points overall. He also hauled in 21 rebounds, took 19 steals and dished out 10 assists during his side’s unbeaten run in the tournament which saw them come out on top.
Fortune’s knick-name changed from ‘Kobe’ to the ‘Little big man’ because of the fearless attitude shown to players twice his size and also his ability to play above the rim when he barely reaches the five-foot mark in height.
His impact on the team was felt in every game in the tournament even those that were dominated by Roberts and Kanhai; defenders are always fearful of the skilful guard because his game is mostly unpredictable.
“It was something we had to take time to come up with the decision because we had ‘Brown Sugar’, Kanhai and Fortune going as front-runners for the award. But statistically he came out on top,” Cadogan told Chronicle Sports yesterday.
For his heroics, and copping the MVP award, Fortune will take home a Sony Play Station too, compliments of the Gizmos and Gadgets along with a pair of Michael Jordon sneakers and $20 000 from Gift Land OfficeMax.
Meanwhile, Roberts who played like a beast in the middle for Charlestown/Albouystown took home the Most Rebounds of the tournament award, hauling in 72 ‘boards’ but behind was Christianburg’s Nkossi Gurrick with 69 even though he was absent in his side’s third-place game against North Ruimveldt.
Point guard of the losing finalists Central Mackenzie, Steve Neils Jr, will take home the Most Steals title with 21 and the Best Defensive Player award will go to his team mate Jason Alonzo who had a total of 18 blocks.
Christianburg point guard Nevin Grenville was awarded for his unselfish ways displayed in his six games when he was adjudged the player who dished out the most assists (19) in the competition.
The prizes will be given out prior to the start of tomorrow’s game at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall which will see Fortune and Roberts take their ‘Ghetto Celebrity’ status given Charlestown/Albouystown team against an Inter-Ward Superstar team.
