Nrityageet 31 scheduled to open tomorrow at the National Cultural Centre will be performed under the theme: “Let’s Treasure and Celebrate Our Natural Environment”
According to the host of the cultural show, the Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troupe M.S dance choreographies, stage sets/projections, props, music, and costumes will encompass the Creation of the Universe; Global Warming; Man’s Cultural and Economic Pursuits and Impacts on Nature; Carbon Reduction Worldwide and Guyana’s Contribution; Climate Change; El Nino and Negative Impacts on the Earth’s Surface.
Linking the theme that runs through the presentation is a storyline that portrays an 11 year old girl, Cathy, who watches on from outside the studio gates longing to learn to dance and grabs the opportunity when its offerred. She attempts to learn all the dance styles even thouggh her body refuses to cooperate. Cathy is funny, determined, and a pleasure to watch.
The show will run until Sunday.
On May 5 last, Nrityageet celebrated its 31st anniversary dance theatre production.
Produced and performed by the Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troupe, Nrityageet has been presenting annual performances of the highest standard for over 30 years. Nadira and Indranie Shah Dance Troupe M.S. received the National Award, the Medal of Service, for ”Our Sustained and Outstanding Contribution to the Cultural Mosaic of Guyana.”
Nrityageet has been repeatedly awarded “Best Dance Production”, “Best Costumes” and “Best Set” by the Guyana Theatre Arts Awards and the Madame Iffel Award of Barbados. Also receiving a special award by the Theatre Arts Awards for 21 years of ‘Exceptional Diligence in the Pursuit of Excellence’ and recently by the New York group of Guyanese for ‘Long and Sustained Dance Productions of Excellence’.
In addition to new experimental, classical, folk, jazz, rock, hip-hop and other popular dance choreographies, presentations will include highlights of choreographies by Nrityageet senior dancers/instructors and Guyana’s great choreographers – Nadira Shah Berry, Andre Subryan, Phillip Mc Clintock, Vivian Daniels, and Linda Griffith. Nritygeet dance theatre involve Nrityageet senior/junior dancers, young teenagers and adults from schools within Georgetown, the National School of Dance, the University of Guyana, and early school leavers seeking a worthwhile occupation while they decide on lifetime career pursuits.
”We have over 50 dancers in our dance school and new students are coming in every day. Our elementary, junior, and senior dancers are committed to dancing as lifelong dreams. Our dance producers and choreographers, create presentations for the love of dance and the satisfaction of producing a dance programme that is truly Guyanese, South American, and Caribbean. Although with a strong Indo-Guyanese input our choreographies reflect an international repertoire incorporating dance styles from our multi-cultural background drawing from global trends. At the same time, we maintain our original form of Khatak, Orisi, and Indian Folk,” declared director, Dr. Seeta Shah Roath.
The word “Nrityageet” means pure song and dance. In Nrityageet stage productions over the years, the producers have used their talents and experience in dance and theatre arts to present the history and culture of their ancestors combined with their visions, moods, ideas, experiments in dance, costumes, music, stage sets, lights, sound, and special effects, adding to intricate dance sequences, and making Nrityageet what it has been over the last 31 years – a labour of love for the Arts.
