ROHAN Singh of 245 West Lusignan, East Coast Demerara was, on Tuesday, brought before Magistrate Shurdell Isaacs-Marcus at the Cove and John Magistrates’ Court, charged with the unlawful assault of Sabrina Harrinarine so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
Singh pleaded guilty to the charge. Attorney-at-law, Harrichand Mahadeo, who appeared for the defendant, told the court that the virtual complainant and Singh lived together for some time.
He added that his client has broken-off from his union with Harrinarine over a year ago and relocated to his mother’s house in the same village, where the two had an estrange relationship.
But Sabrina continued to pursue him for reasons unknown.
However, police prosecutor Lloyd Thomas refuted the attorney’s submission, and told the court that, based on his information, the two were living together at Singh’s mother’s house when the incident occurred.
According to the police, on April 21 last, Sabrina left their common-law home to purchase some groceries. However, Sabrina took ‘an extended time’ that the defendant presumed to be unusual, to return home. Upon her subsequent return, Singh accused the young woman of infidelity and dealt her several cuffs about the body. A report was made, leading to Singh being arrested and charged.
The prosecution objected to bail, noting that the prevalence of matters of this nature has become a scourge in society and that Singh may be a danger to the virtual complainant.
However, in an ironic twist to the prosecution’s story, the virtual complainant, when question by Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus , told the court that Rohan Singh did move from their home in October last year and she did pursue him and moved-in at his mother’s home to be with him.
After hearing this, the prosecutor told the court that his facts differ from what the young woman explained, and as a result changed his initial request for bail to be refused. He, however, asked that the court implement judicial conditions so that both Singh and Harrinarine may avoid each other.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus agreed to the prosecutor’s suggestions and cautioned both parties to strive to live harmoniously with each other.
Singh was then granted $60,000 bail and ordered to return to the Vigilance Magistrates’ Court on 28th October, 2010 for a progress report.
