Unity call at poorly attended May Day rally

In Region Two…
FORMER Parliamentarian Ishack Basir has called on all workers across the country to unite.
Speaking at the May Day rally, staged in Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast, the longstanding member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP)
said workers countrywide must be involved in highlighting the struggles of the working class on May Day, whether unionised or not.
According to him, they all must be friends because they are interconnected, as without them, the State machinery cannot move forward.
Basir said organised workers must read about the New Human Global Order as written by the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
He was very critical of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and its harsh conditions for lending to poor countries.
The poorly attended rally followed a procession from Damon’s Cross at La Belle Alliance to Anna Regina Community Centre Ground under the theme ‘Towards a decent work agenda.’
The marchers, with their individual union banners, were accompanied by steelpan music as they proceeded along the public road.
At the rallying point, messages were read by representatives of Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), Guyana Postal and Telecommunication Workers Union (GPTWU) and National Association of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial Employees (NACCIE).
