… two in police custody
Two brothers are in police custody assisting with investigations following the death of Simeon Lawrence, of Rasville, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, who was reportedly beaten to death on Sunday night during an armed robbery. Police reported that at about 22:15 hrs on Sunday, April 25, 2010, computer technician Marvin Lyte of South Ruimveldt Gardens was on his way home, walking along David Rose Street, when he was held up by three men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The men then took away a laptop computer, a cell phone and personal documents and ran away.
The victim raised an alarm and neighbouring residents responded and gave chase behind the perpetrators, one of whom was caught and reportedly beaten.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said an unlicensed revolver was found in his possession and has been lodged.
The teenager’s mother, Michelle Parks, yesterday told the Guyana Chronicle that she last saw her son alive at about 20:00 hrs last Sunday night, just before she retired to bed.
The grieving mother said her son had just had tea and a shower and she did not even know when he left home. It was about 05:00 hrs yesterday morning when she heard her sister, who lives next door, screaming that she learnt of his death.
She was accompanied to identify the body of her son Simeon, whose facial features she could barely recognise, as a result of the severe blows he suffered at the hands of a group of residents from South Ruimveldt, another city ward.
Michelle Parks said, “Imagine I could not even recognise my own son, one side of his face was bashed in and you could see how badly he was beaten in the face and head.”Mrs. Parks added that she visited the police station where she gave a statement and saw two young men sitting on the bench, whom the police said are assisting with the investigations.
The woman noted that she could not say how her son ended up in South Ruimveldt and the circumstances surrounding his death are unclear to her
She said her son worked as a mason.
On April 28, 2008, Lawrence’ brother, Travis Parks, 22, was shot and killed by Mekdeci Mining Company (MMC) security guards in Tiger Bay, also in the city.
He was shot in the back after being asked about a gold chain which he reportedly denied knowing anything about.
