GUYANA is fully prepared to host the ICC Twenty20 matches that are allocated to this country. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony made a thorough walkthrough of the worksheet to ensure the success of the Games.
The preparation for the Opening Ceremony and the six matches in Guyana will be highly successful.
The Guyana National Stadium at Providence is in peak condition, ready to play cricket at the highest level. The outfield is lush green and the wicket looks like we will be having a runs fest. Guyana will see batsmen making runs and the fielding at the stadium will be spectacular. The outfield is inviting players to dive and take some of the most spectacular catches.
The outfield will also be lightening fast. However, the challenge will be the readiness of the players to go after the ball.
Professional Cricket League
Guyana needs to introduce a Professional Cricket League, more particular Twenty/20. The Guyana Cricket administrators along with corporate citizens must take our cricket seriously and in a business way move it to a higher level.
The future of our cricket depends on our professionalism.
Guyana won the first-ever Twenty20 real big money game when they won the inaugural Allan Stanford Tournament. Guyana narrowly lost the second game after reaching the final and Guyana humbled Trinidad and Tobago at Queen’s Park Oval in the ‘Haiti’ Fundraising Twenty20 match.
It is interesting to note the Trinidadians came and practised in Guyana before they went to compete successfully in the ICC Champions’ League.
Our facility at Providence is most attractive and conducive to professionalism. The most recent training programme which brought our best with some younger players was indeed a revelation. Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Narsingh Deonarine were given golden opportunities to train and excel in their preparations for the up-coming Twenty/20 ICC Tournament.
Our Players
We have highly talented players with tremendous potential. Our player’s work ethics is indeed encouraging. However, our inter-county games are not productive. Hence, a professional League with a minimum of four teams or six teams will give rise to a competition that will be interesting and highly competitive.
Our top one hundred cricketers in Guyana should be put together and in a competitive bidding process we can emerge with at least four or six teams.
These teams will have their own coaches and managers. The teams will play cricket in a professional manner. The training and preparation of the teams will lead to more physically fit and fully focused cricketers.
Where the county matches lack competitiveness the professional league will help our players at home and very quickly attract young players. The level of coaching will also develop and our players will be more ready to compete at the highest level.
As our cricket administrators are thinking about preparation for the Regional Twenty20 competition, we must get focused to see Guyana winning so that Guyanese can qualify for 2010 ICC Champions League. In order that we can be in with a good chance to win the Regional Twenty20 competition we must raise the standard of our domestic cricket. Hence, we must create a professional culture for our players and our cricket administrators. The Professional Cricket League will enable our players to earn a living at home.
The professional League teams will be leased to corporate sponsors. The teams will be managed by the sponsors. Hence, the team will be highly competitive and market-oriented. The teams will have the spirit to win and play competitively.
Sponsors
Sponsors will get more than their money’s worth in advertisement and the mileage will be enormous. Accountability and transparency will be a must. Those who will be marketing this product will enjoy the support of a new dynamic cricket season. This Professional League will give rise for the selection of the best possible Guyana team.
It cannot be denied that an investment in a Professional League Twenty/20 Championship in Guyana will bring new dynamics to cricket. The national stadium can come alive every week with exciting day and night cricket. While the players will benefit from tremendous practice, the spectators will enjoy the entertainment.
Further, our nation will be rallying behind a better prepared and winning team.
