Mayor’s Cup football …
BK International Western Tigers mauled Den Amstel 6-0, while Santos beat Uitvlugt 2-0 when play in the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament continued last Saturday at the GFC ground with two matches. Nedd Fraser and Shermon David both registered doubles for Western Tigers, while Giddeon Payne and Lyndon Pickette scored one goal each.
Fraser scored his double in the 6th and 37th minutes while David scored his first goal in the 18th minute to give Western Tigers a 3-0 lead at the interval.
David then completed his double in the 60th minute with a header which resulted from a corner kick.
Payne and Pickette then added two goals to their team’s account in the 76th and 78th minutes respectively.
The West Demerara side (Den Amstel) came close to scoring from a free kick, but the ball was cleared off the goal line by David after it passed through the legs of Tigers custodian Derrick Carter
Earlier, Kacy John and Carlos Matthews were on target for Santos in the 2-0 win against Uitvlugt.
John scored in the 3rd minute while Matthews found his target in the 62nd minute.
Uitvlugt were reduced to ten men following the expulsion of Charles Stoby in the 33rd minute.
Both winners will join Fruta Conquerors and Uprising in the quarter-final round.
The competition will continue on Friday at the same venue with another double-header.
The winning team of this annual event will take home the $500 000 first prize along with the Mayor’s Cup, while the second-placed team will receive $200 000 and the team finishing third will take home $150 000.
Several individual prizes are also up for grabs.
