Lover assault defendant released on own recognisance

MERLYN Rodney, charged with assaulting her lover, was released on her own recognisance yesterday after she told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson that she did not have the $7,000 surety ordered.
The defendant, of Lot 168 Stewart Drive, Triumph, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the unlawful assault of Eric Gonsalves,
on December 17, 2009.
Rodney said she shared a romantic relationship with Gonsalves for the past two years but, during that time, he never told her he was living home with the mother of his child.
The magistrate asked Rodney if she ever asked Gonsalves to visit where he lives and she said he would always make excuses to prevent her from going there.
Gonsalves, however, claimed that Rodney knew his situation and he was only involved with her for five months.
Before postponing the case to May 19, the magistrate admonished both Rodney and Gonsalves to conduct themselves properly.
