GUYANA is again gearing to host international cricket at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence and will once more be welcoming thousands of foreign patrons for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Twenty20 cricket.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon told reporters that Cabinet, at its meeting on Tuesday last, was informed of preparations by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony.
The tournament which begins on April 30 will follow warm up matches on April 27 which Minister Anthony advised are open to patrons free of cost but will be ticketed.
Official matches on April 30 will see New Zealand taking on Sri Lanka and West Indies battling Ireland while on May 3, Sri Lanka will challenge Zimbabwe and West Indies will compete against England.
The match venue is at present being spruced up and Minister Anthony also mentioned that preparations are being made to present Guyana in a welcoming fashion for the anticipated thousands of tourists.
The tournament will feature 12 teams among which is the newcomer, Afghanistan.
The teams will play a Round-Robin match by dividing into four groups. Two teams from each group will play super-eight matches in two groups and the top two will be qualified for the first knock-out round in the semifinals.
Two matches will be held in same stadium each day and the entire matches will be played in three cricket grounds.
