Police Constable dies in motor cycle crash

Police Constable 20489 Clarence Gomes was killed on the Nabaclis Public Road, East Coast Demerara, yesterday morning when he lost control of the motor cycle, which crashed into a lamp pole.
At about 06:50 hours Gomes, 20, of Lancaster Village, also on the East Coast Demerara, was driving a motor cycle along the roadway when he lost control of it and
crashed into a lamp pole. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was stationed at the Presidential Guard and was at the time on his way home.
Gomes is the second policeman to be killed in separate road fatalities recently.
Last Sunday night Police Detective Corporal Devane Cummings, 32, of Sisters Village Sideline Dam, was killed in a fatal accident at Nismes, on West Bank Demerara.
The policeman, who is attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of Brickdam Police Station in Georgetown, had been riding a motorcycle on his way to work when he was involved in a head-on collision with a minibus.
Police reported that it happened at 19:10 h when the minibus driver drove out of a service station and hit the victim.
Cummings was rushed to West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) and pronounced dead on arrival there.
He will be cremated on Wednesday.
