Woman charged with bogus house lot transaction remanded

SUNITA Singh, 40, of lot 18 Charles Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of obtaining money by false pretence.
She appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson but was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
It was alleged that, by pretending to be employed at the
Ministry of Housing and Water, between December 7, 2009 and January 9, 2010, with intent to defraud, she obtained of $820,000 from Chaitram Baneswarie, by falsely pretending that she was in a position to acquire a house lot for him at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, knowing it to be false.
The virtual complainant, who was in the courtroom, related that the accused and another person told him they can secure the house lot if he paid the money.
Baneswarie said, after he became aware that the transaction was bogus, the other man drank poison and is still hospitalised but contacted him two days ago, stating that he is willing to settle the matter when he is out of hospital.
The case will be called, again on March 22.
