Court orders psychiatric evaluation of necrophilia accused

SUSPECTED necrophiliac (a person with an abnormal attraction, especially an erotic attraction to corpses) Roopram Bacchus pleaded guilty at New Amsterdam Court, on Wednesday, to a charge of illegal exhumation of dead Sumintra Shawnarayan, from Reliance Cemetery, Canje, also in Berbice.
But the 20-year-old garbage collector alias ‘Toe Toe’ was not required to plea to the indictable offence of committing an indecent act on the corpse, when he
appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, who remanded him to prison until March 17.
The Court also ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the prisoner, of Lot 25 Adelphi, East Canje.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, alleged that the latter crime was committed between March 5 and  6 when the accused exhumed the deceased.
The Prosecutor said the 75-year-old woman had died on Phagwah Day, March 1, after being a patient at New Amsterdam Hospital suffering from cardiac disorder and was buried in a tomb on March 5.
However, subsequent checks by relatives revealed that her grave was opened and the coffin removed for the indecent purpose, the Prosecutor informed.
He added that foreign and local currencies, as well as jewellery, which were placed in the hands of the deceased, as is a custom in her religion, were stolen.
