Prashad discloses plan to attract more air carriers

With increased arrivals…
MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manniram Prashad had said that, with the continued increase in arrivals here, there would be need for more affordable airlift into Destination Guyana.
Speaking to the media last Wednesday, in light of the higher air fares being charged by Caribbean Airlines for travel from Trinidad to Guyana.

He said, since his ministry expressed concern over the issue as a result of complaints from the public about ticket prices, there has been a heightened demand by people for more carriers.

“We have had some requests and we are looking at options where a new carrier can come in to offer direct competition to Caribbean Airlines, because people are simply fed up with this sudden and unjustified increase,” Prashad said.

He said a call was made for entrepreneurs or business people to get into the business and see how they can help to alleviate the situation and make some money at the same time.

Prashad, noting that more and more tourists are coming into the country, recalled that last year saw the highest rise in arrivals, amounting to nine per cent more than in 2008.

He said, last January showed that the figure had risen 14 per cent over 2009 and the Ministry expects a similar pattern for February, due to the numerous activities and the Mashramani celebrations, for which lot of people came, including from the United States (U.S.) and Canada.

“I think February will also be a record breaking month, so we would need more affordable airlift,” Prashad said.

He explained that, if the charges skyrocket, then people will have choices.

“So we want to make sure that we encourage local and overseas investors to try to bring in another service into Guyana,” Prashad reiterated.

He said the Government, through his ministry, is trying to attract other international airlines but local people can do charters and wet leases, too. (PRIYA NAUTH)
