I read this week a very tragic story of the Canadian Guyanese gentleman who was gunned down by gun toting bandits at a West Ruimveldt night spot and tears came to my eyes. This story is an all recurring theme on the Guyana landscape wherein a number of persons are losing their lives or maimed due to the actions of bandits who are armed to the hilt. Since the year began there have been several acts of armed robbery with deadly consequences; hardly a day goes by without one reading of some gun related story. As bad as these stories are the most distressing thing about the situation is no one seems to care. I speak about the print and electronic media houses those who should be the watchdogs of society, where are they, why aren’t they out in force condemning these killings. Where the so called persons who should at least show are concern for the wanton loss of life; where is the Human Rights Organisation? or should I say the “Criminal Rights Organization” in Guyana; seems they are more interested in the rights of hardcore criminals than there are of Rawle Alexander Harding or for a matter of fact, all the other persons butchered at the hands of criminals. My blood boils when I see the callous nature these so-called lovers of our dear country treat these cases. When that young criminal was burnt by the policemen who were trying to extract valuable information from the suspect these spin doctors were out in force condemning the police, there was no want of articles in that instance as they rabidly hounded the hapless policemen. Now we have a situation that requires public as well as media outrage and sadly no one seems to care.
What is very obvious is that the media houses are more interested in politicizing non issues than they are with important matters that affect the peace and development of our nation sad I say a very sick sad state of affairs in my country.
