THE Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) 2010 Super will kick off on Sunday with five matches at different venues.
Double-headers are carded for the GCC ground Bourda and the Mackenzie Sports Club ground while the Blairmont Community Centre ground, West Coast Berbice will host one match.
The feature match at the GCC ground in Georgetown will bring together defending champions Alpha United of Georgetown and Seawall United of West Demerara while in the opening game Guyana Defence Force of Georgetown tackle Liquid Gold of Bartica.
At the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden, home sides Milerock and five-time Kashif and Shanghai champions Bakewell Topp XX will face opponents from East Demerara in Buxton United and Victoria Kings respectively.
The other match on the opening day will see Rosignol United play hosts to Georgetown’s Sunburst Camptown.
According to Administrative Director of the league Kirk Douglas, the league would be conducted on a two-round home and away tie basis with the top eight of the 10 participating teams contesting a knock-out competition at the end of the first round and the winner would be declared the knock-out champions.
The eight teams will then contest a second round and the top four teams will contest another knock-out competition with the winner being declared Super League champions.
Douglas said the F’s inaugural upper League which was staged last year was played on a one-round basis, but since then the GFF decided to stage a two-round league, which of course will cost much more than last year’s league.
He disclosed that the budget for this year’s league in the vicinity of US$200 000.
Adding that transportation and meals for the teams from their respective bases would take up much of the finances, being funded by the international body FIFA.
The first round is expected to culminate in May, before Guyana celebrates its Independence anniversary, while the second round is expected to start late August or early September and end in October.
According to Douglas, the US$200 000 budget will also offset the cost of holding educational programmes for administrators, training staff and referees.
He informed that a marketing consultant from FIFA is scheduled to arrive in the country by April to teach the GFF how to market the programme, thereby garnering financial and other support to run the league without IA’s financial assistance.
Douglas said the organising committee is currently seeking sponsorship from the Guyana government and corporate Guyana in making the league a success for years to come.
He said the GFF intends to market the League more than it did last year and is looking forward to support not only from corporate Guyana, but also from football fans and enthusiasts.
The same 10 teams that contested the tournament last year are the very teams that will contest this year’s event.
