DESMOND Denny, 55, of Lot 36 D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was yesterday fined $8,000 with the alternative of four months imprisonment, on conviction for unlawful assault.
He pleaded guilty to assaulting Kathleen Dey on February 15 and claimed that, during their relationship, she burnt him twice with hot water.
Denny said, on the day of the incident, he asked her for some more food and she became annoyed, resulting in an argument between them.
He said he grabbed her and the buttons on her jacket came loose but he alleged that she is of unsound mind and would steal his belongings and sell them to satisfy her smoking habit.
When allowed to speak, however, Dey said, in her two weeks with him, she was unaware that he had nowhere to live.
She said she took him in and he would drink and behave stupidly, not wanting her to go anywhere. So she put him out of her house.
The woman said, the day he assaulted her, she was going for her medication and he followed her. As soon as she emerged from collecting the medicine, he cuffed her in the face, ripped her top garment and demanded the clothes he bought for her.
The woman said Denny also stole her underwear and sold it but he denied selling it and said he threw it away in anger.
