Court changes plea in receiving stolen motorbike case

ACTING Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday changed, from guilty to not guilty, the plea by Meltina Jonas, 33, who is charged with receiving a stolen motorcycle. The magistrate made the decision, after the defendant (no address given) explained why she admitted that, between April 1 and 30, 2009, she received the motorbike, knowing it to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.
Jonas said two Brazilian men went to her home and sold her the motorcycle, for which she made a $75,000 down payment and promised to pay the rest when the duo returned with the relevant documents.
But, after the men never went back, she kept the motorcycle.
Jonas was put on $100,000 bail and the case was transferred to Lethem Court, in Rupununi, for March 9.
