Previously convicted livestock thief jailed

GORDON Rawlins, 24, of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje, was sentenced to six months imprisonment, on Tuesday, for livestock theft.
He pleaded guilty to the offence, before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo at New Amsterdam Court, also in Berbice, admitting that he stole a sheep valued $20,000,
property of Abu Baker Razack, of Cumberland, East Canje.
The Court was told Razack secured his animals in a pen but, on investigating an unusual sound emanating from the enclosure, he saw the prisoner with the animal in his possession.
An alarm was raised and Police nabbed the thief with his booty.
Rawlins asked for mercy but Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, recalled that the convict’s antecedents, including the September 22, 2009 theft of three pigs belonging to Taijpaul Singh and the September 24 larceny of a ‘Doberman’ from his neighbour, Ravindra Ramnauth, for each of which he was fined $25,000.
