booted out of U20 finals
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, (CMC) – Caribbean teams Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica formally exited the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Finals Saturday when they lost their second consecutive games in the World Cup qualifying series.
The USA shot past T&T 4-0 and Mexico outgunned Jamaica 2-0 in the second set of Group B matches at Estadio Cementos Progreso.
The losses by Jamaica and T&T ended Caribbean hopes at the tournament, as Cuba were also ousted when reigning champions Canada beat them 2-0 on Friday in Group A.
The USA scored all their goals in the first half against a fighting T&T outfit.
Morgan Marlborough made it 1-0 after just five minutes and Kristy Mewis (23rd) doubled the lead before Sydney Leroux’s two-goal burst widened the gap.
Leroux scored with a header in the 36th and again on the stroke of half-time with a neat one-time shot for her second consecutive double. She had also scored twice against Jamaica on Thursday.
In the evening’s other match, Mexico got goals just before the break and immediately after to sink the young Reggae Girlz, who had lost 0-6 to the USA on Thursday when the Mexicans had beaten T&T 2-1.
Charlyn Corral gave Mexico the lead in the 45th minute and Liliana Godoy was on target in the 47th of a lopsided match to secure a semi-final spot for the Central American side.
Jamaica’s chances were almost exclusively limited to shots from distance, the best of which came less than two minutes after the opening whistle when Nicole Campbell drove a shot from midfield that was inches high.
Mexico will face the USA in the group decider on Monday while Jamaica and T&T will clash in a battle to avoid the group’s cellar position.
The finalists and third-place team in the tournament will qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Germany July 13 to August 1.
