GPL restores electricity to City Hall
OFFICIALS of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council, whose premises was plunged into darkness some days ago after being disconnected by the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) following a row over the payment of money, were the beneficiaries of a mandatory injunction ordering the power company to restore their lights.
City Hall officials acknowledged Friday that the court’s order had been obeyed and that electricity had been restored by GPL.
The Ex-Parte application by the Town Clerk of Georgetown, made on behalf of the City Council, was on January 20 granted by Justice Diana Insanally, who made the Order after reading an affidavit for the interim injunction, and hearing arguments from Attorney-at-law for the plaintiff.
Among other things, the judge ordered and directed that a Mandatory Order is hereby granted, directing the defendant, immediately on receipt of an Order from this Honourable Court, to reconnect the supply of electricity to the Mayor and Councilors of the City of Georgetown property situate at City Hall Compound (Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown), until the hearing and determination of a summons in this cause returnable on the 2nd day of March, 2010 at 09:00h (in Chambers).
It was further ordered that the Plaintiff do serve on the defendants a Summons returnable for that date to continue this injunction, together with a sealed and certified copy of the Writ of Summons returnable for the 2nd day of March, 2010 at 09:00h.
The judge’s Order had borne a memorandum which stated: “N.B: If you the within Defendants neglect to obey this order, you will be liable to process of execution for the purpose of compelling you to obey same.”
