Well-known barber remanded on carnal knowledge charges

KNOWN New Amsterdam, Berbice, barber Elroy Trellis was remanded to prison on Thursday when he faced three carnal knowledge charges.

Before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, in New Amsterdam Court, the accused was charged, indictably, with having had sexual intercourse, on December 2 and January 6 and 13, respectively, with a girl under the age of 13 years.

Trellis was refused bail on an objection by Police Inspector Fazil Karimbaskh, prosecuting, who cited the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.

The Prosecutor told the Court that Trellis is suffering from a terminal disease and is alleged to have infected the victim.

However, Defence Counsel Charran Das Persaud submitted that no medical evidence has been presented to support the statement by the Prosecutor.

The crimes were allegedly committed in houses at Islington, East Bank Berbice and Sheet Anchor, East Canje, all in the ‘Ancient County’, when the child was supposed to be attending Mathematics lessons.
