An 80-year old man was struck down at the junction of Norton and Chapel Streets, Lodge, yesterday morning, and died shortly after, at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Dead is Cyril Haley, a former employee of the Guyana Bauxite Industry, Linden.
The accident occurred at 11:25 h. as the octogenarian, who was riding a pedal cycle along Chapel Street, attempted to cross Norton Street.
He was struck down by a white canter truck driven by a man who gave his name as Roger Brisport of South Ruimveldt Park.
The driver of the motor vehicle picked up the injured man who was in an unconscious state and rushed him to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, but he never regained consciousness.
On arrival, the patient was immediately taken by stretcher into the emergency room where doctors on duty immediately began attending to him. Since it was determined that he had suffered head injuries, measures were taken to stabilise the injured man and have him taken to another hospital in the city to have a CT-scan done.
But he died before this could be done.
An ID card in the dead man’s pocket bears the name Cyril Hayley, and his relatives are asked to contact the hospital.
