-Benn, Deosarran and Hira hit half centuries
FORMER national Under-19 opener Vishal Singh inked his name into the minds of the national selectors with a worthy ton (127), as Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) demolished Transport Sports Club (TSC) by an innings and 21 runs on the final day of their third round clash in the Demerara zone of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) national three day competition yesterday.
Playing at the GCC ground, the hosts who resumed on 212-2 with Singh on 75 and Leon Johnson 15, lost Johnson who failed to add to his overnight score, but Singh went onto make his century and the second for the team in their first innings score of 297-3 declared.
Needing to clear off their first innings deficit of 129 in order to make their host bat a second time in a game which commenced 90 minutes late, TSC failed to do so and folded for 108 in their second innings, with Kevin Alphonso 23 being the leading batsman.
Stephen Alves contributed 19 while Devon Nandanand followed up his unbeaten 38 in the first innings, with another unbeaten score of 18, but it was not enough resistance to Johnson’s leg break, as the former West Indies Under-19 skipper grabbed 4-14 and along with Ricardo Jadunauth and Gavin Singh who both took 2-24, ensured their team completed the victory by 16:20h and got the time to play some soccer.
At the Lusignan Sports Club (LSC) ground on the East Coast, national selectee Trevor Benn must have inked his name too, when he made 61 for Police Sports Club (PSC) who resuming on their overnight score of 233-7 (no play on Saturday), were bowled out for 314.
Benn, who resumed on 25, struck four fours and three sixes in his innings, while Vishal Jaigobin made 29 which included three fours and Pernell London 25 for PSC.
Off spinner Azim Haniff continued to be a thorn in the flesh of the lawmen, when he took 5-73 from 28 overs while Kumar Bissoondial took 2-38 from 11 for LSC, who, thanks to the efforts of Krishna Deosarran (57* 5×4; 2×6), Harrinarine Hira 52 (5×4, 2×6), Vishnu Ramjeet (38), Somnauth Bharat (34) and Surujpaul Deosarran 21*, reached 210-3 when play was called off.
At both the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground and Everest Cricket Club, no play was possible for the day, which prevented both host teams from gaining much needed points against Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) respectively.
At MSC, the home team was set to resume on 114-4 in reply to the visitors first innings score of 280 all out, with Danny Narayan unbeaten on 47 while at Camp Road, Everest who were chasing GNIC’s mammoth first innings score of 355-7 declared, were set to resume on 68-2 with Abhilash Dhookie and Christopher Hemraj being the not out batsmen on 35 and 28 respectively.
