… ‘Nagas’ takes another 5-wicket haul
ANOTHER five-wicket haul by national Under-19 back-of-the-arm spinner Totaram Bishun, coupled with a resilient but pugnacious ton from Kevin George, helped place home team Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in a commanding position at the end of day two of their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) first division three-day competition at the DCC ground yesterday.
Across the Demerara River in Canal Number Two, Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) took first innings points from the home team New Line Cavaliers in their encounter, but it was the DCC/LSC match which grabbed the attention of local cricket lovers.
Winning the toss and opting to take first strike, LSC scored 234 with Harrinarine Hira leading the way with 60, decorated with six fours and one six, while former national Under-19 opener Krishna Deosarran made 51 (5×4) and Rajendra Naikbarran 31 (4×4, 1×6).
Bishun took 9-67 for DCC who replied with 305, thanks to George’s 109 which included eight fours and a similar number of sixes, Deonauth Baksh 75 (7×4), national Under-15 leg-spinner Omesh Danram 55* (5×4, 2×6), Christopher Barnwell 38 (5×4, 1×6) and Derwin Christian 33 (3×4, 2×6).
Emran Khan took 6-115 and Kumar Bishundial 3-71 for LSC, who faced a first innings deficit of 121 runs, ended the day on 153-7, a lead of 32 runs, with Deosarran who struck both Bishun and Danram for back-to-back sixes from the five he hit in total along with the one four in his 42.
Vishnu Ramjeet supported Deosarran with 23 (3×4, 1×6) while Hira made 21 (2×4, 1×6) but no other batsman managed to get into double figures as Bishun took his second five-wicket haul of the match to end with 5-74 (14-141 so far), while Danram took 2-43.
At Canal Number Two, NLC were bowled out for 186 in their first innings, with former Guyana and West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo leading the way with 32 and Cowen Ismond 30 against the bowling of Damian Van Tull who took 3-60 and Steven Jacobs and Seon Daniels with two for 35 and 42 respectively.
In reply, MSC scored 204 with Danny Narayan hitting 83, Jacobs 46 and former national Under-15 skipper Carlos La Rose 17 against the bowling of Nagamootoo who took 5-70 and Paul Wintz 3-31.
Batting a second time with a first innings deficit of 18 runs, NLC reached 121-5 at the close of play, with Gajanand Singh (43) and Andrew Lyght Jr 24 being the main scorers against Jacobs, who has so far taken 2-19 with his off-spin.
