A 32-year-old man is in police custody after he reportedly beat his mother to death early yesterday morning.

Dead is Ramratty Deonauth of 41 Croal Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara.

The woman’s son went home in a drunken rage and began assaulting his mother when she refused his request for money to satisfy his drug habits.

An occupant, Priya Darshnie, 56, who hid under the bed to save herself during the attack, told the Guyana Chronicle that she too was often beaten by the man.

The woman, visibly shaken, added that he even wanted to have sex with her.

“I does beg on the streets and bring the money here to buy groceries for Ramratty, her sick husband, but he wanted the money to buy drugs,” she said.

Darshnie said that Ravindra Deonauth habitually beat his mother and kicked and cuffed.

Ramratty’s bedridden husband, Siew Deonauth, 58, yesterday displayed several marks of violence about his body, inflicted by his son.

He said too that his alcoholic son at times raped his wife who worked as a domestic help to provide for them.

Neighbours said that he was in the habit of beating his parents and took advantage of them for years and they often intervened.

Up to Sunday afternoon they intervened when he began beating his mother.

Residents were busy erecting a tent yesterday when this newspaper visited, many of whom were upset about the woman’s demise.

Police said that at about 15:30 h Sunday Deonauth’s son allegedly went home under the influence of alcohol and began to assault her by cuffing and kicking her about her body. Neighbours intervened and he went away.

About 05:00 h yesterday Deonauth was found dead in her bed.

The suspect has been arrested and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
