Stabroek tarmac robbery defendant remanded

JOSHUA Payne, 34, of Victoria East Coast Demerara, will return before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on July 22, still facing a robbery with violence charge.

Until then, he was remanded to prison, after pleading not guilty to robbing Carl Jacobs, on July 8, of a wallet containing $47,000 and a cell phone, all to the value of $69,000 and, at the time or immediately before or after, used personal violence on him.

Jacobs said the defendant, who claimed Jamaican and American citizenship, asked him for a cigarette while the former was having a drink on Stabroek Market tarmac.

The virtual complainant said he overheard Payne telling two other men that he is the money man and, shortly after, the defendant placed his hand around his neck and started going through his pockets.

Jacobs said public-spirited citizens helped him apprehend Payne.

After saying he cannot remember his lot number at Victoria, the magistrate told Payne she was sending him to a place that does have one.

Three other men, on a joint attempted burglary charge, were also denied bail in the same Court.

Twenty-year-olds Troy Jordan, of Lot 100 and Delon Abrams, of Lot 59, both in Crane Housing Scheme and Naresh Bajjan, 18, of Lot 93 Best, all on West Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty.

It is alleged that, on July 9, at Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, they were attempting to break and enter the dwelling house of Fareeza Khan.

Jordan told the Court he was in search of a job at Great Diamond when Police arrested him.

He claimed the three of them were severely beaten and, in the course of the beating, Bajjan confessed to the crime.

Khan said she heard a noise at her door and, when she went to investigate, she saw the trio trying to break open the door.

They will remain on remand until July 17, when they will make their next appearance at Providence Court, on East Bank Demerara, too.
