Mystery illness victims seek relief during school break

THE Santa Rosa Secondary School students affected by the mystery illness, that has hit Moruka in North West District, have adopted a strategy in their quest for relief.

The school year having ended, the girls chose to, during the break, either take a holiday away from the community or get involved in productive activities to keep themselves occupied.

Residents in the area are thankful that no more incidents were reported since 13-year-old Sabrina Rahaman took sick at her home in Kwebanna last week.

Duanna Heyliger, 15, who fell victim several times during the year, told the Guyana Chronicle she is keeping herself busy.

Her mother, Ms. Anita Vansluytman said her daughter volunteered with the Red Cross Society this past weekend and would soon be staring work/study at the District Hospital.

Another 15-year-old, Mollyann La Rose, who was sent to Georgetown after falling ill, returned to Moruka but is planning another trip.

She said she is going to Mabaruma, also in North West District, to spend time with cousins.

While her journey to comfort is a few days off, the last of the girls at the school dormitories wended their way home last Friday.

The Dorm Mother, Mrs. Jean Rahaman said they were relieved to be leaving.

The mysterious ailment resurfaced in October 2008 after first striking three years ago and returned last February, since when 73 girls, between the ages of 13 and 18 years, have suffered from it while attending the school.

Analyses done by health personnel were unsuccessful in ascertaining the cause of the affliction which showed no obvious genetic or other links nor resulted in long term physical consequences and its origin remains a source of controversy.
