LABA/Pioneer Construction Senior Club championship resumes today

A WEEKEND of basketball is planned for Linden when the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s 2008/9 Pioneer Construction-sponsored Senior Club basketball championship, featuring the seven first division clubs, resumes with a double today at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.

The break was to allow the new administration, which is now headed by new president Abdulla Hamid, to take over.

The basketball championship will continue with second round play. The first game tomorrow night will be between Alleyene’s Retrieve Raiders and Patriots at 19:00 h while the second game will be between Glands Trucking Service Bulls and Wismar Pistons at 20:30 h.

Tomorrow South Star New Ballers will take on Glands Trucking Service Bulls in the first game while Raiders play Victory Valley Royals in the second game.

Sunday’s double-header will see game one between Wismar Pistons and Patriots while the second brings together Amelia’s Ward Jets and New Ballers.

The tournament, which began in November last year, is being played on a double round-robin format where a total of 21 matches will be played in each round to determine the winners based on the final points standings.

At the end of the first round, national club champions Wismar Pistons and Amelia’s Ward Jets were joint leaders on 11 points, from five wins and one loss; second were Victory Valley Royals on 10 points from four wins and two losses; Patriots third with nine points after three wins and three losses; GTS Bulls followed with eight points after two wins and four defeats while Retrieve Raiders and New Ballers were on the carpet with one win and five defeats.

In the ‘second round’ New Ballers have beaten Retrieve Raiders 72-59 and Royals won against Jets 72-57: while Jets bounced back to defeat Raiders 63-51 and Royals stopped Patriots 60-50, in the latest matches played.

It means therefore that with each win worth two points, a loss one point, and loss by walkover no point, the current points table shows Jets and Royals as joint leaders with 14 points after seven wins and two losses, Pistons on 11 points having not played any second round matches as yet, with five wins and one defeat. Patriots have 10 points from three wins and four defeats.

Ballers are on nine points from two wins and five defeats while Raiders also have nine points but from one win and seven losses while in the cellar having not played any match in the second round are Bulls with eight points after two wins and four defeats.
