ONE is often forced to wonder whether our public functionaries spend more time conning the public rather than getting on with the job of serving the public.
I do empathise with the water woes of so many communities in this country. We seem to be sliding backwards because of our poor work ethic, incompetence, nepotism, dereliction of duty, corruption or all of the foregoing.
Water begins to flow through the taps in Enmore at 05:30 hours most days and is gone at 18:00 hours. Many days it doesn’t flow at all or, if it does, I happen, unfortunately, to be at work and cannot benefit from the favour GWI seems to think it is doing the Guyanese public. Even when the water flows, it does not get higher than two feet above ground level. Water to lower flat sinks and bathroom is reason for celebration.
There was a time when water flowed through the taps at 05:00 hours and was cut off at 21:00 hours. That situation worked well for everybody. But someone, who believes he is smarter than anybody else or wishes to save electricity by timing the well to the new hours, displays no concern for consumers, many of whom have already paid their water rates. Then there is the blame game between GWI and GPL.
What a con!
My understanding is that the pump operator for the Enmore pump resides at Mahaica and has been transferred (instead of being dismissed) from working nearer home because of incompetence. Naturally, he brings his incompetence with him. I understand, further, that he may be ‘well connected’.
Sadly, so many people have to suffer, but then, that is the story of our Dear Land of Guyana.
