Police witness testifies at brother murder trial

By George Barclay
A POLICEMAN involved with the investigations testified yesterday at the trial of Kazim Mohamed, who is indicted for the murder of his brother, Nazim Mohamed.

-Sergeant Nigel Stephens said, when he first put the allegation to the accused, he declared he had no knowledge of the unlawful killing.

The witness said, during January 2005, he was posted in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Grove Police Station, East Bank Demerara where the January 16 crime was reported.

He said he took the prisoner there and told him it was alleged that he murdered his sibling at La Penitence, Georgetown.

Stephens said the accused was about to reply when he stopped and repeated the caution to him.

Witness said the accused replied that he knew nothing about it.

The case for the Prosecution, being conducted by State Counsel Dianna Boyan, is that following a row between them, the accused fatally stabbed the other brother.

Defence Counsel Peter Hugh is appearing for the accused before Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed jury in the continuing case.
