MINISTER of Housing and Water, Mr. Irfaan Ali, has explained the situation with regard to water woes being experienced in several areas countrywide, including Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo; Uitvlugt and Ocean View, West Coast Demerara and Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara.
He said, with regard to the last, over the last five days, there was an issue surrounding the delivery.
Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) has fixed pumps and systems with fluctuation mechanisms and, once the power supply voltage gets to a certain level, they trip, Ali said, pointing out that the Non Pariel concern is being sorted out with Guyana Power & Light (GPL) presently.
At Zeelugt, GWI has an outstanding matter, because the network is now stretched to Tuschen and the system, basically, collapsed after sand affected it.
Ali said GWI tried unsuccessfully to install a new pump there. However, the Vergenoegen well, also on East Bank Essequibo, should be completed within another month and a half and would be interconnected to improve the flow in that area.
He said there is sectionalised problem at Zeelugt, Ocean View and Uitvlugt and GWI has started to supply with black tanks through the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs).
Ali said his ministry has done a level of service survey in every village and will embark on a heavy investment capital programme that will see great improvement in the next six to seven months, especially on East Coast of Demerara and some parts of Region Three (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) and a number of others in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne).
