THE importance and relevance of child protection legislation cannot be underscored. This last weekend when most children were looking forward to having fun during family picnics two young children lost their lives in a fire in down town Georgetown. The real tragedy was not that the children died in the fire but the fact that the mother of the children who, if I am to accept what was reported, was incapable of meeting her responsibility. The mother’s aunt in whose care the children were at the time of the incident seems to be no better. Was this a case of unfit parenting ? and I was told that the current legislation was inadequate to deal with this situation. The Minister of Human Services and Social Security in January tabled five Bills, addressing different aspects of child protection and rights in Guyana. These Bills are at present before a Parliamentary Select Committee for consideration before final approval. When approved, these new acts would allow the Government to take action to prevent these types of behaviour and take action against parents and guardians of children if and when these incidents occur. While legislation will not make persons better parents, the knowledge that they would be sanctioned because of their actions or inaction could result in a safer environment for our children and a better future for Guyana.
