Government has thrown a lifeline to farmers

PRESIDENT Jagdeo’s recent visit to the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary (MMA) communities was very enlightening and as a farmer it gives me a sense of encouragement since farming is largely under threat from the effects of climate change.

The President’s call for diversification is more than welcome since competition on the world market in terms of traditional crops such as rice has grown. With diversification, this would open a new avenue for farmers to gain more income.

In my view the idea of aquaculture is indeed a very good one since the fishing industry will be further enhanced. Production will increase and the farmers need not worry about markets being available. I sure do hope that the critics of the fishing industry are taking note, since there was much comment on whether government is paying emphasis on this industry. Well, for the record, the government will be helping farmers in the MMA areas to dig these ponds.

The additional outlet to the Atlantic from the East Demerara Water Conservancy which is in its design stage will also bring additional relief to the farmers living in those areas.

Government’s contribution in terms of aid is very heartening. For the coming rice crop some farmers from these areas will receive seed paddy to help them get back up on their feet.
Government has indeed thrown a lifeline to farmers!
