At Demerara Assizes…
EX-POLICEMAN Clement Bailey shot and killed Clifton Garraway because his woman friend complained that the latter had touched her breast and was hostile when confronted, the judge and jury in the Garnett Street murder trial heard yesterday.
State Prosecutor Fabayo Azore, who presented the case for the Prosecution at the Demerara Assizes, said Bailey was enquiring from him the reason for his action and Garraway responded: “So what you can do about it?”
According to the prosecutor, a witness to the confrontation said that, following the response by Garraway, Bailey identified himself as a policeman and then fired about four or five shots at him.
The wounded man was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the Prosecutor said, adding that a post mortem examination,
performed by the forensic pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh established that death was due to shock and haemorrhage caused by multiple gunshot injuries.
Bailey pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the unlawful killing but Defence Counsel Hukumchand attributed the crime to wine, woman, music and molestation by the now deceased.
Justice William Ramlal postponed sentence on the convict who had served the Guyana Police Force for nine years and ordered a probation report on his character for Thursday April 16. (GEORGE BARCLAY)
