Domestic abuse could only be reduced by behavioural change

DOMESTIC violence seems to be the new topic of contention in Guyana today. Recently several persons lost their lives while others were injured according to reports in the media.

This is despite the enactment of the domestic violence legislation and the several changes in the procedure for investigating reports and public awareness sessions to educate persons on this issue.

The fact it that abuse is a learnt behaviour and to effectively deal with the issue the legislation along with the necessary facilities for compulsory counselling will have to be put in place.

This however, will not guarantee that this scourge will be removed from society. Some of the more developed countries have some of the most progressive domestic violence laws and it is still a problem in those societies.

The media in Guyana could play an important role in the continuous education process by not just highlighting when and where these atrocities occur, but by providing information on where and how to seek help.

It is unfortunate to see reports in the media, whether emanating from opposition press conferences of in reports of abuse, suggesting that the government is somehow responsible for these acts.

This is irresponsible journalism as it removes the responsibility for one’s actions from them and places it in the Government and thereby allowing persons to justify their actions.

Acts of domestic abuse could only be reduced by behavioural change. The society needs to work with the established institutions to help both the victims and perpetrators to seek and get help. This should not be a political issue.
