Trainee cop bonded after making restitution

POLICE recruit Jermaine Bentham, 18, of Lot 3 La Retraite, West Bank Demerara, was bonded yesterday after he repaid money stolen from a fellow trainee.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle ordered Bentham to sign and bond to keep the peace for two years and pay $5,000 Court costs.

The probationer had pleaded not guilty to the larceny charge.

The allegation against him was that, on February 21, he stole $36,380 cash and other things, with a total value of $37,580, property of Royston Chapman.

The virtual complainant told the Court he and Bentham were training together in the Guyana Police Force when he gave him his bank card and pin number to withdraw some money but the defendant took more.

Bentham offered to make restitution and handed over $37,580 to Chapman in the courtroom.
