Ministry promoting computer training among health workers

MINISTER within the Health Ministry, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, in an invited comment, has said that the Ministry of Health’s work is continuing even while addressing the flood and being efficient in its flood response.

“The Ministry of Health is not only addressing the floods but is also dealing with other matters, exemplifying the capacity of the Ministry,” Ramsaran posited.

The Minister pointed out the Ministry’s works, in collaboration with Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), to ensure that all health workers are computer literate through a six week remedial training course being held at the Ministry of Health Annex at Liliendaal.

Ramsaran said that PAHO’s contribution of computer systems has increased the capacity for training and the third session of training began yesterday with two classes at 17:00h and 21:00h respectively for two hours.

Director for Health Sciences and Education, Mr. Noel Holder, added that there were additional training courses available to health sector workers to improve their capacity and also reinforce the human resource at the Ministry of Health.

“There are training courses for pharmacy assistants, in rehabilitation, laboratory work, nursing and other areas that will facilitate the provision of human resources to institutions in all 10 regions,” Holder said.

The Minister referred to the recent distribution of wheel chairs to persons whose mobility was affected because of various injuries, another venture by the Ministry of Health to cater to the needs of Guyanese people.

The most recent donation was to Mrs. Sybil Morris, 41, of Stanley Town, who was involved in an accident that claimed her left leg.

Morris, who resides and works as the care taker at the Amerindian Hostel in Stanley Town, expressed her gratitude for the wheelchair.

Among the other recipients of wheelchairs are 55- year-old Sarjoo Ramsahai of Better Hope, 72-year-old Ralph Paris of Lodge, 66-year-old Jagmohan Narine of Plantation Hope Estate, 8- year-old Shamar Persaud of Stanleytown Berbice, 51-year-old Suknarine Ramobeer of Better Hope, 58-year-old Ganga Persaud of Corentyne, 45-year-old Steven William of Kuru Kururu and 84- year-old Sahodra Bissonchand of Enterprise.

In addition to these works, Ramsarran pointed out that the completion of more health facilities around Guyana is almost complete.

He cited the works being done at the Lethem Hospital, the Mabaruma Hospital and the Port Mourant Ophthalmology Centre.

“These facilities are almost complete and will provide the capacity to absorb the resources of the newly trained doctors from Cuba, as well as others trained in various fields in the health sector, sector,” Dr. Ramsaran said.
