TWO bandits have robbed the owners of the newly-opened Good Life Supermarket at Belvedere, East Berbice, Corentyne of $600,000, an iPhone and other valuables on Tuesday evening. The young Chinese couple, who opened their supermarket a few weeks before the Christmas holiday, told Guyana Chronicle that they are traumatised by the incident.

Police have detained four persons in connection with the robbery which was captured on surveillance camera. According to a police source, the robbers disguised themselves in black clothing, kerchiefs tied around their mouths and hoodies.

One was armed with a cutlass and the other with a gun. They stormed the supermarket around 19:00 hrs and ordered shoppers to lie on the floor. The shoppers complied but the male Chinese owner did not and was gun butted several times to the head.

His wife, who was at the time at the cash register behind the counter, ran to her husband’s rescue only to be kicked by the bandit who was hitting her husband. The robbers demanded valuables and after failing to get a response, the robber with the cutlass broadsided the Chinese couple while his accomplice with the gun stood guard.

The cutlass-wielding bandit then went upstairs to the living quarters of the couple and reportedly ransacked it while looking for valuables. Upon his return, he ordered the Chinese woman to open the cash register and took away the money.

Police were summoned to the scene but by the time they arrived, the bandits had already made good their escape on a motorcycle.
