District 10 seem set on reclaiming Champion of Champions title

……Yaw breaks Under-20 boys 200M record

DISTRICT 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) seem set to reclaim the Champion of Champions title at this year’s 53rd Annual Schools Track and Field, Cycling and Swimming Championships which comes to an end this evening at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

Already, District 10 seem to have the Track and Field championships in their bag as they have already amassed 528 and one half point, 191 points more than their closest rivals in defending champions District 11 (North Georgetown).
At least one record was broken yesterday and this feat was achieved by Jason Yaw of District Four (East Coast Demerara) who clocked 22 seconds in winning the event, beating the previous record of 22.5 seconds which was set by Samuel Doris (District 4) at the same venue last year.
Yaw who competed in the Under-16 age group last year set a record of 22.6 seconds for the 200-metre at the same venue.
Another good 200-metre performance yesterday, was that of Kevin Abbensetts who edged District 13 athlete Sylwin Foster to win the under-20 boys 200-metre
With 10 field events finals and 26 track events finals slated for today, District 11 will be hard pressed to get past the former champion of champions title holder.
Should District 10 win the track and field championships, they will secure 20 points and should District 11 place second, they will earn 17 points.
District 11 made a successful defence of their swimming championships title (20 points) on Monday, but District 10 placed a close second (17) points.
Added to that, District 10 is currently fourth in the points standing of the cycling championships with 92 points from 21 finals, while District 11 is second with 98 points.
District Six (Corentyne) is currently leading the points standing for the cycling championships with 125 points.
In the teacher’s championships, District 10 has 92 points from 33 finals, while District 11 has 109 and one half.
District Three (West Demerara) currently leads the points standing in this championship with 188 and one half point followed by District 12 (East Georgetown) with 143 points. District Seven (Bartica is on 113 points.
Today’s track and field finals include the 400-metre for boys and girls in all the age groups, the 4X100, 4X400 and medley relays for the various age groups as well along with the 300-metre race for girls open and the 5000-metre race for boys open.
In the cycling championship, the Devil takes the Hindmost for boys and girls open are two highly anticipated events and apart from those two, the 400-metre race for boys and girls under-16 and under-14 are scheduled for today.
Meanwhile, yesterday saw some exciting finishes in the 1500-metre races for the various age groups.
In the boys under-20 race, District Six’s denzil Leitch staved off a strong challenge from District10 Kevin Nicholas and District Nine (Rupununi ) to win the event.
In the girls version, District 10 athlete Shenika Chapman proved too strong for her opponents as she led from the start and never surrendered the lead. It was a great performance. Second was District Nine’s Moma Wilson and third District Six’s Marissa Lawson.
In the under-18 boys 1500-metre, District Four’s (East Coast Demerara athlete Ornesto Thomas proved too good for the rest of the field as he sprinted from the bunch with more than 150 metres remaining. Second was District Five’s (West Coast Berbice) Marlon Nicholson who on Tuesday won the boys open 10K road race.
On the distaff side, Andrea Foster of District Four stayed with the rest of the starters until there was two laps remaining then made her move, District 10 athlete Cassie Kirton tried to follow but Foster was too much to handle, Kirton placed second and Melissa Byass of District 15 (New Amsterdam placed third.
In the under-16 boys 1500-metre, Jamal Johnson of District 10 came out on top over Jamal Belle (District 6) and Leandrew Issacs (District 9).
On the distaff side, Cassey George (District 10) won ahead of Delica harper (District 5) and Kezra Murray (District 3) respectively.
