Government chemist is Jamaica’s new anti-doping chief

KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – A chemist employed with the government, Carey Brown is the new executive director of the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO).

Brown replaces Renee Anne Shirley, who left the anti-doping commission almost nine months ago.
Brown’s appointment comes days before a three-member team from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) visits the island to conduct an extraordinary audit on the commission’s drug-testing programme.
The audit is also expected to focus on the first half of 2012 when it was reported that the local agency completed one out-of-competition test on Jamaica’s track and field athletes prior to the London Olympic Games.
JADCO has come under increased scrutiny in recent months following a rash of positive doping tests by Jamaican athletes.
The organisation has also been publicly criticised as well following a series of damaging articles published locally and internationally by the former executive director Shirley, which exposed weaknesses within the commission’s testing programme.
