VICE-PRESIDENT and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has urged Guyanese to not gamble with their future and place it in the hands of a “bunch of misfits.”

The Vice President made these remarks Saturday evening at an election rally at the Anna Regina Car Park.

Speaking before thousands of Guyanese, he not only pointed to the former APNU+AFC’s legacy of failed governance but also called out those newcomers, in this case, the political party of U.S.-sanctioned businessman Azruddin Mohamed- We Invest In Nationhood (WIN)- for recycling the PPP’s policy agenda and calling it their own.

The Vice President also pointed to the WIN’s manifesto launch presser, which was held last Thursday, in which several of their party executives fumbled over elementary questions.

“You think you can rest the future of your children in their hands, a bunch of misfits? They have no experience whatsoever to manage anything, to do anything, and they’re all going to face sanctions,” the Vice President said.
Further, he spoke about the opposition factions’ plan to attempt to push the PPP into a minority government, like under President Donald Romator.

“Be wise and make wise choices on September 1,” Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo told the energised crowd.

However, he rejected those plans and said: “They are dreaming. Look at the crowd there. That’s not going to happen.”
Under then-Ramotar, the APNU+AFC wielded the one-seat majority, and national development was stalled during that period”, the Vice President noted.

There were a series of budget cuts and the blockage of key development initiatives by the APNU+AFC-led National Assembly.
With this noted, the Vice President pointed that no other political party than the PPP can keep Guyana on the rapid development path that it is on.

He then diverted his attention to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, a leader who has been tried, trusted and tested, according to him.
The Vice President not only pointed to the rapid development that has been taking place under President Ali’s leadership but also to how he has stood firm in protecting the nation’s territorial sovereignty.

“We can’t put the future at risk,” he said, urging citizens to mobilise and head to the polls on September 1.

Even while battling COVID-19, the country witnessed a new era of development and according to the Vice President, “Just imagine five years more, what could happen in this country. We’ll transform it. We fulfil the ambitions of our people. Everyone will get help. We’ve laid out our plans for the future.”

From fewer taxes to continued expansion in education, health, and socio-economic programmes, the PPP/C is aiming to continue on this rapid development trajectory in the next term.

Over 60,000 new jobs have been created since 2020, reversing the painful job losses of the previous administration. Public servants have seen their wages rise, old-age pensions have doubled and more than 40,000 families now hold the keys to house lots that were once out of reach.

Students and young professionals have benefited enormously too; nearly 30,000 Guyanese have been awarded fully funded GOAL scholarships, while the dream of free university education has become a reality for many at the University of Guyana.
