Her sister, Dolly Singh, told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that, on Thursday morning, she was told that her sibling had ingested poison after she suffered another series of blows from her husband during a quarrel.
She said that, accompanied by other relatives, she went over to her sister’s residence and saw her lying on the steps in obvious pain. She said she pleaded with the man to take her sister to the hospital, after he refused to cease his telephone conversation whilst ignoring her sister.
Singh added that a taxi was solicited, but the man turned back and took her sister home, instead of to the hospital, but her relatives received the news and took her to the GPHC themselves, where she was admitted but later succumbed.
Singh said her sibling had been living with the man for about one year and seven months, after she had left her husband; but, during that time, she had endured an abusive relationship.
The man has been identified as “Mahin”, a cane cutter aged about 47 years old. He has fled the scene and remains in hiding up to press time. Nevertheless, he is being sought by the police, after a report had been made at the Enmore Police Outpost.
Singh said her sister, the mother of three children aged 18, 19 and 21, had reportedly ingested poison after she was repeatedly beaten and forced to consume the liquid offered by her husband. That incident occurred since about 4am on Thursday, but her relatives learnt of what had transpired only at about 10am the same day.
Relatives said yesterday that the same suspect had beaten to death another female relative with whom he had shared a common-law relationship two years ago, and they want justice this time. They said that even though Samaroo consumed alcohol, she was a good person.
Samaroo is expected to be laid to rest on Tuesday.
