LOCAL Hotel chain Sleepin International has offered sponsorship for the upcoming Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic IV, which will be held on August 17 at the Police Sports Club ground and August 18 at MSC ground, Linden. At the same time, K&B Mining and Hardware Supplies has seen it fit to renew its sponsorship with the event, which for the first time will be held over a two-day period at two different venues and will be launched in the boardroom of telecommunications service provider Digicel, today.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sleepin International Hotel chain, Clifton Bacchus, stated that he is overwhelmed to have the opportunity to partner with the organisers to ensure that there is enough hospitality and comfort during the two-day meet.
Caribbean athletes from Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and Suriname are already confirmed to compete in the meet that will see the heats and three distance finals take place on the first day at Eve Leary and all other finals on the second day at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.
Technical Delegate on the Management Committee for the fourth edition of the Boyce and Jefford Classic, Cornel Rose, thanked Sleepin for its contribution, indicating that he is part of ensuring that all the right systems are in place for an international competition.
Apart from doling out lucrative cash prizes to clubs and athletes, the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic is aimed at establishing a prominent place for athletics in Guyana where leading local athletes can match strides with their Caribbean counterparts.
Meanwhile, Accountant of K&B Mining and Hardware Supplies, Seeta Husain, speaking on behalf of her Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Hema Persaud, said it is an honour to continue funding the competition.
“It’s our pleasure to support this event; we have watched it grow from the beginning, and we are in full support of this event. We are proud to be a part of something that is continuing to develop local athletes and the community of Linden,” Husain said.
Husain indicated that their investment in the event is an enduring one that began with the vision to have a benchmark event for athletics, according to the organisers, adding that support for the event will continue from K&B Mining in the future.
Competitions Director on the Management Committee for the Boyce & Jefford Track and Field Classic IV, Mark Scott, committed to ensuring that K&B Mining continue to get value for its unyielding contributions since the event’s inauguration four years ago.
Scott thanked the CEO for sharing a vision that continues to manifest in the impressive growth of the event. He revealed that so serious is the nature of the Classic that two workshops for officials will be held to apprise them of the rules and standards required.
“We’re extremely grateful for your support of this event. We will continue to have an impressive meet that you can always be proud to be a part,” Scott said, adding that the meet will continue to raise the bar for athletes and athletics in Guyana.
“When you look around, you have every other major sport in Guyana with a signature event with lucrative cash prizes, but none for athletics. The founders Mr (Colin) Boyce and Mr (Edison) Jefford want to change that with this meet,” Scott explained.
Scott, an athletics coach and trained teacher with tons of experience at the competitions level, is of the view that the time had come to have a forum where the ‘best of the best’ in local athletics was decided.
