TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Police Constable Ocquna Dawson, of Lot 100 Murphy Street, Good Intent, West Bank Demerara, was on Wednesday remanded to prison on three charges. He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with unlawful possession of ammunition, discharging a loaded firearm with the intent to injure and damage to property.
Particulars of the offences, to which he pleaded not guilty, said that on February 18, in Waterloo Street, Georgetown, being in possession of the gun, he shot and injured Philip Small and damaged a bulletproof jacket issued to him by the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The court was told the defendant had been on patrol duty when he approached the virtual complainant (VC) and two others in the notorious Globe Yard on Waterloo Street.
Dawson became involved in a fight with Small, who tried to attack the policeman with a pair of scissors but the latter discharged the firearm.
The cop, who is stationed at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) and was represented by attorney-at-law, Mr. Lyndon Amsterdam, will make his next court appearance on June 21.
