SEVERAL stalls along the road that leads to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) at Vreed-en-Hoop were demolished, yesterday, as nurses threatened a ‘sit out’ to force this action after a colleague was robbed there at gunpoint this week.
The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) and the Best/Klien Pouderoyen Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) with the help of the police took the demolition action yesterday.
According to Region 3 Chairman Julius Faerber, a nurse who works at the WDRH was held at gunpoint and robbed on Wednesday evening, allegedly by persons who lurk among the stalls on the roadside after dark.
He said that the nurses at the hospital had threatened to stage a ‘sit out’ if the stalls were not removed from the roadside.
According to reports, this is not the first incident of this nature and the nurses who spoke briefly to this publication via telephone have confirmed that this has happened many times before.
Vendors who peddle their goods illegally on street corners had been served with notices for quite some time in different areas but some were still reluctant to move, claiming that their “spots” are important.
However, Faerber indicated that these vendors will be prosecuted under the full extent of the law if they rebuild their stalls on the roadway.
