POLICE Traffic Chief, Superintendent Hugh Denhert was involved in a damage accident with a minibus while driving his vehicle along Little Abary Public Road, East Coast Demerara, early Thursday morning. The police report said it occurred about 06:50 hrs as the Traffic Officer was proceeding along the roadway, which was wet and with an oil slick on the surface.
His car collided with the minibus that was travelling in the opposite direction, while negotiating a turn, but no one was injured.
Police said reports have been received that several such accidents took place in that area during the same May 2 morning, due to the oil on the road.
Mr. Denhert only returned to Guyana on May 1 after attending an April 21 to 30 road safety seminar, titled ‘Safer Road by Design Across Six Continents’, hosted by the International Road Federation, in Florida, United States.
That programme dealt with topical issues that will assist in the better appreciation and understanding of the technical aspects of roadside, work zone, vulnerable user, traffic management and road safety audits.
The training is designed to be able to assist the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and other stakeholders in the planning and implementation of strategies and programmes with the objective of improving the consciousness of road users about the importance of using the roads correctly and making the country’s roads safer.
