GCB/Limacol U-15 : Demerara trounce E’bo as President’s XI denied victory

DEMERARA trounced perennial whipping boys Essequibo by an innings and 19 runs at the Wales Community ground yesterday, while the President’s XI were denied a come-from-behind victory against defending champions Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Berbice at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground. The abovementioned results brought an end to the second round of action in this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)-organised, Limacol-sponsored Under-15 two-day tournament, setting up an exciting final round clash between GT&T Berbice and Demerara at the GCC ground from tomorrow.
At Wales, Essequibo who trailed their opponents by 83 runs on first innings at the end of the first day after they were bowled out for 66 to which their opponents replied with 149 for 9, began yesterday’s final day’s play on 45 for 5, with Mark Williams unbeaten on 20.
Williams went on to top-score with 30 to be the lone batsman to reach double figures, as the Cinderella County team were bowled out for 64 which was scored off 36.3 overs, with Sagar Hetheramani claiming 4 for 9, Timothy McAlmont 2 for 4, Kelvin Shewprasad 2 for 13 and Ronaldo Mohammed who was later named Man-of- the-Match, 2 for 26.
At the GCC ground, President’s XI began the final day’s play on 68 for 1, a lead of 42 runs over the defending champions and thanks to Raymond Perez’ 59 (resumed on 44) that was decorated with five fours and Richie Luknauth 21 (resumed on 9), reached 152 for 9 off their 60 overs that were allotted to them in their second innings.
Asked to score 126 to complete an outright win, the second of the tournament after they crushed Essequibo by 181 runs in their first match at Enmore, GT&T Berbice were wobbling on 91 for 9 off 60 overs, when the game was surprisingly brought to a halt at 16:26hrs.
Filon Crandon topscored with 27, Joel Seetaram who took 5 for 43 in the President’s XI second innings, made 13 while Richie Luknauth tried his valiant best to bowl his team to a come-from-behind win, by claiming 6 for 33 and received support from Keshram Seyhodan who took 2 for 11.
However, both the coach of the President’s XI Julian Moore and GCB Junior Chairman of Selectors Nazimul Drepaul were crying foul at the way the game ended, saying the President’s XI were forced to bat 89 overs in their second innings, in their first round encounter against Demerara at Everest.
